Xbox 360 Softmod Guide: Peer Pressure for the Fat

Xbox 360 Softmod Guide

Peer Pressure on a Fat console with HDMI and a dead DVD drive. Written for beginners, October 2026.

Read this first

Peer Pressure is a permanent softmod by Grimdoomer. After installing it, your Xbox boots into a hacked state every time, with no soldering. Games installed to the hard drive also don’t need the disc, so your broken DVD drive won’t matter for playing.

It rewrites your console’s NAND. The author warns it could cause data loss or stop the console starting, and fixing that might need a hardware NAND flasher. That’s why you make a backup first and keep it forever.
Never go online while doing this. Unplug the network cable and turn Wi-Fi off. Guides warn you will almost certainly get banned from Xbox Live. Treat the ban risk as real after the install too.
It works on Fat consoles (Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper). It does not work on Corona or Winchester. DashLaunch plugins aren’t supported, and the source code isn’t public.

Links you’ll need

I couldn’t verify a safe download link for Aurora, so search for it yourself and get it from a source you trust. I haven’t opened the two Blitz demo links myself; they come from the project’s users.

1Get a working controller

The installer is all menus, so you need a controller first. A real Xbox 360 controller says “Xbox 360” on it. Wired ones have a flat USB plug. Wireless ones run on AA batteries.

  1. Put batteries in a wireless controller and press the big green button.
  2. Turn the console on and press the small sync button on the console (front, under the flap on top).
  3. Press the sync button on the controller. The lights stop spinning when it’s paired.

2Update to dashboard 17559

Your console says 17489. The exploit only works on 2.0.17559, the final Xbox 360 update.

  1. On your PC, open Microsoft’s system update page and download the ZIP.
  2. Format a USB stick as FAT32 and extract the ZIP.
  3. Copy the folder called $SystemUpdate to the top level of the stick. It must not be inside another folder.
  4. Turn the Xbox off, plug the stick in, and turn it on. The update installs by itself.
  5. Don’t switch the console off during the update.
  6. Check it: press Guide, then Settings, System, Console Settings, System Info. It should say 2.0.17559.
If the console is online it can also update itself from System Info → Update System. The BadUpdate guides prefer the USB route.

3Download the files on your PC

  1. Go to the releases page, download SoftmodInstaller.zip, and extract it with 7-Zip.
  2. Download the Rock Band Blitz demo from the archive.org page and extract it with 7-Zip. Inside it you need the folder named 5841122D. If you can’t find it, this issue thread explains the fix.
  3. Optional: download Aurora and extract it to a folder. Rename the folder to just Aurora.

4Build the installer stick

  1. Format the stick as FAT32. If it’s over 32GB Windows won’t offer FAT32, so use Rufus or a smaller stick.
  2. In Windows, turn on Show hidden items.
  3. Copy the BadUpdatePayload and Content folders from SoftmodInstaller onto the top level of the stick.
  4. Open Content then 0000000000000000 on the stick. A 5841122D folder is already there. Merge the demo’s 5841122D folder into it. Say yes if Windows asks to replace or merge.
  5. Optional (Aurora): copy the Aurora folder into BadUpdatePayload\SoftmodExtras. Its SoftmodExtras.ini has an Aurora example, and the source line must match your folder name.
  6. Optional: also put $SystemUpdate on this stick, in case you need to format your hard drive.

When done, the stick should look like this:

USB stick
├── $SystemUpdate (optional)
├── BadUpdatePayload
│ └── SoftmodExtras (Aurora goes here)
└── Content
    └── 0000000000000000
        └── 5841122D
├── 00000001 (exploit save, from the installer)
└── 000D0000 (Rock Band Blitz demo)

The installer may also add an FFFE07DF folder next to 5841122D. That’s normal. Copy the whole stick to your PC as a spare.

5Get the console ready

  1. Unplug the network cable and make sure Wi-Fi is off.
  2. Fit the mechanical hard drive in the Fat’s drive slot.
  3. Plug in the controller (or sync it) and the installer stick.
  4. Turn the console on. Look in the Games section. You should see Rock Band Blitz.
Only one free USB port? Use a wireless controller for the stick, or a cheap USB hub.

6Run the installer

  1. Open Rock Band Blitz. If it asks where to save, choose the USB stick.
  2. At the title screen press A. The text “Running exploit…” appears and the ring of light flashes. Then the installer opens. If it doesn’t, your files are in the wrong place; go back to step 4.
  3. Read the disclaimer and accept it.
  4. Create System Backup from the main menu. It saves your NAND image, CPU key and hard drive security data to the stick, then checks it.
  5. Power off, take the stick to your PC, and copy BadUpdatePayload\SystemBackups somewhere safe. Keep it forever. It’s your only way back if something goes wrong.
  6. Put the stick back in and run the installer again.
  7. If your hard drive is new or blank, choose Format HDD first. (It won’t format an official Microsoft drive.)
  8. Choose Install Softmod. Tick Install Extras (pick Aurora, and xell if you like) and Disable XBL In Retail Mode. That second option blocks Live sign-in in retail mode and sets the parental code to YYYY.
  9. Choose Full Install.
  10. When it says the SMC needs a reset, press OK. The console switches off. Wait at least 5 seconds, then switch it on again.
Don’t unplug or switch off during the install. If it fails, the log is at BadUpdatePayload\Log.txt on the stick.

7First boot

  1. The ring of light flashes, then the boot animation plays. With Aurora set, you land in Aurora. Otherwise you get the normal dashboard. Expect about 5 seconds extra on boot.
  2. Press the Guide button, go to the Settings tab, and open Softmod Settings. Here you pick your homebrew dashboard (Aurora) and boot animation.
  3. The first button on the Guide’s Home tab jumps to your homebrew dashboard. The Xbox button always goes back to the Microsoft dashboard.
  4. Leave NAND write protection switched on unless you’re absolutely sure.

8Games

Peer Pressure removes the signature and licence checks, so ripped games run, but they must be in the right format.

FormatWhat it isWorks?
GOD (Games on Demand)A folder tree of small data files, like Microsoft’s own downloadsYes, best choice
Extracted folderThe disc’s contents as a folder with default.xex at the topYes
ISO fileOne big disc imageNo. Convert to GOD or extract first
Arcade, DLC packagesDownloadable contentYes

Where games go

  • GOD: Hdd1:\Content\0000000000000000\TITLEID\00007000\
  • Extracted: Hdd1:\Games\Game name\ with default.xex inside

Then open Aurora, add the folder as a scan path if needed, and rescan. Aurora sometimes needs a rescan or a cleared data folder before it shows new games.

Getting games onto the console

  1. FTP (easiest): turn FTP on in Aurora’s settings, connect the Xbox to your home network, and use FileZilla. The default login is usually xbox and xbox. Drag the game folder into Hdd1:\Games. Stay off Xbox Live while you do this.
  2. USB stick: copy the game folder to a stick, plug it in, and copy it across in Aurora’s File Manager.
  3. Pull the drive: connect the hard drive to your PC with an adapter and use an Xbox 360 file tool. This is fastest for big libraries.
Can I run games from a USB stick or SSD?

The exploit needs the mechanical hard drive. Some community reports say Aurora reads GOD games from a USB drive, but I haven’t seen Peer Pressure’s own docs confirm it. Plan on the internal drive, and try USB as a bonus. A bigger hard drive makes boot slower, because the console has to mount it.

My DVD drive is dead. How do I get games?

Aurora’s Disc to GOD tool uses the console’s own drive, so it won’t work for you. Ripping Xbox 360 discs on a PC normally needs a compatible disc drive with custom firmware. That’s general knowledge and I haven’t verified it here, so check the guides on ConsoleMods. Only rip discs you own.

Something went wrong

ProblemTry this
Rock Band Blitz isn’t in GamesFolders are in the wrong place. Check the layout in step 4 and re-extract the demo with 7-Zip.
Installer doesn’t openPress A at the title screen. Read Log.txt on the stick.
Console won’t start after installRun the installer again and use Startup Repair, or Restore System Backup.
Exploit keeps retryingTry a different mechanical drive. SSDs often fail.

Stick looks full after the Xbox formats itA known quirk. Reformat the stick on your PC.

Undo everything

Run the installer, choose Uninstall Softmod, then Restore System Backup. This is the cleanest way back to a stock console, and the reason the backup matters.

Based on the Peer Pressure README and wiki, plus community guides. Not affiliated with Microsoft or the author. Still unverified: games running from USB, an Aurora download link, and whether a dead DVD drive causes any problem during install (the docs list no disc drive requirement).
